Japan’s 83 Year Old Fish Market Relocated

Japan’s famous and also the world’s largest Tsukiji fish market has finally closed down. A newer and more modern market has been opened not too far away at Toyosu about 2 Km away from Tsukiji.

The Tsukiji fish market has been a favourite tourist site as well as a very sentimental asset of many fishmongers who have carried on their business here for so many years. The market relocation has long been in the pipeline, however did not come to pass due to stiff oppositions from the fishmongers and locals. However, the development work for the Olympics 2020 has given the Japanese government to finally make the move.

On October 6th 2018, the Tsukiji market witnesses its final tuna auction before closing shutters forever. It was indeed a very emotional moment for many who had gathered there.  Nearly 500 varieties of seafood were sold in this market day in and day out.

Old memories are hard to fade for sure but let us hope that the new market is soon owned by the fishmongers and flourishes more than the older one.
