Donburi @ Furukawa Fish Market

Donburi @ Furukawa Fish Market

In today’s post, we present to you another famous fish market in Japan. The Furukawa fish market also called the Aomori Gyosai Center is a public fish market in central Aomori. Unlike the old Tsukiji market or its newer version the Toyosu market, the Furukawa market is not crowded and noisy. Its visitors are more locals than tourists.

The Furukawa market has many stalls closely packed together each selling a variety of local seafood and some pickles and vegetables too. The seafood sold in this market boasts to be the freshest in Japan and the sashimi taste much richer owing to the colder waters in the northern prefecture.

The main attraction and specialty of this fish market is the concept that allows the visitors to make their own Donburi also called Nokeddon from the various fresh and seasonal seafood sold in the market. A Donburi is typically a bowl of rice that has different toppings to suit one’s individual taste. The whole process of making one’s own Donburi is quite fun much like a carnival. Visitors can buy coupons that they can exchange for the various items that they pick along the way. The basic rice bowl can be bought for two coupons and then you could roam your way through the market picking and choosing all the topics of your choice. The toppings are offered at varying prices. Most stalls sell fresh seafood, fish eggs and seaweed in small portions that can be bought for less than three coupons. Some stalls sell miso soup and pickles too. The food bowl can however not be taken outside the market. There are tables set around th market to sit and relish your meal.

If you ever happen to visit Japan, and are a big sashimi lover, you surely want this place to be on your itinerary.
