While India awaits its fate on the anti-dumping tariffs that the U.S. is planning to impose on Shrimps, the trade war between the U.S. and China has just escalated. While the U.S. imposed a $34 billion tariff on Chinese goods, the Chinese have retaliated with a 25% tariff hike on exports to U.S. Under this tariff include seafood. Meanwhile, seafood products from Alaska are sold directly to China and they will be hit very hard.

Historically, trade wars have snowballed to adversely affect economies of other countries as well. The trade wars of the 1930s exacerbated the already dire economic situation of the U.S. resulting in the great depression. It in a sense resulted in the tragic World War 2 as a result of countries blaming each other for their misfortunes. We are living in a glorious age with human ingenuity transforming many human lives. There are many more countries waiting to come out of poverty to join the League of Nations contributing to global trade. Under these circumstances, it would be wise for two of the biggest economies to sit down and deal with this issue in a mature manner. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past and leave the global village better than we lived in for the next generation.
