Surströmming – The notorious Swedish cuisine

Surströmming  – The notorious swedish cuisine that makes people who are not familiar with this cuisine almost throw up, has been part of the northern swedish cuisine from the 16th century onwards. One search for Surströmming in youtube, yields search results of many videos from around the globe about people throwing up as soon as the tinned can is opened. Now for the uninitiated, Surströmming is a fermented lighly salted Baltic sea herring.

Just enough salt is added to ensure that rotting of the herring does not happen. Close competitor to this dish is the Hongeohoe of Korea or the Kusaya of Japan. However, the swedish dish is considered to be more putrid than the ones from Korea and Japan. Surströmming is available off the shelves in many western countries. It is not for the faint hearted.
