Enhanced Lobster Traps To Protect Whales

Enhanced Lobster Traps To Protect Whales

There have been many new fishing regulations especially lobster fishing set in place to eliminate the entanglement threat to the North Atlantic right whale. Ashored Innovations, a Canadian company is working on building new lobster traps keeping these regulations in mind.

The company says that though they initially intended to build a new lobster trap but they realised that there maybe reluctance among fishermen to replace their existing traps owing to the huge investment. They therefore scraped the idea of building new traps and decided to build new reliable and submersible buoys that went with the lobster trawls. They are developing buoys that are geo-trackble using acoustic technology to retrieve. `

The company is constantly interacting with fishermen to understand their issues and challenges and designing the new equipment to meet their requirement. The company is currently testing their products in tanks and the Halifax harbour. A deep water prototype testing is also scheduled in the near future.

The company plans to make its product available in the market by April 2019. We do hope that their products help the fishermen improve their efficiency in fishing and thereby increase their profits.
