In, today’s post we present three of the veteran seafood players from the American seafood industry, who have had humble beginnings and inspiring story.
The J. M. Clayton Company was founded in 1890 by Captain John Morgan Clayton and remains the oldest working crab processing plant in the world. It began as a small oyster shucking and packing operation in Hoopersville, Dorchester County, Maryland. Within a few years they began picking, processing and packing crab meat from the delectable Chesapeake Bay blue crab, under the label, “Epicure.” The company was relocated in 1921 to its current Cambridge setting off the Choptank River wanting better supplies, services and transportation facilities. Clayton’s is now operated the great grand children who following in the footsteps Captain John Morgan Clayton, have made the J. M. Clayton Company an extraordinary Chesapeake Bay landmark.
John T. Handy established the company in 1894 making Handy’s America’s oldest seafood processor. Handy has operates from Crisfield, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. Crisfield is known for being home to the world’s best soft shell crabs, crab meat and crab cakes. Handy’s specialises in processed crab of different kinds. From Soft shell crabs to crab cakes, they have them all covered. They deal with a variety of other processed seafood too. They have perfected the art of seafood processing over the years. Their sales avenues have now extended to online retail, wholesale and sale to restaurants.
Hopkins Seafood is a wholesale seafood distributor located in South Philadelphia. E. Frank Hopkins Seafood have been offering the finest selection of fresh and frozen seafood in the Philadelphia area since 1890. They began their growth from the stalls of the Dock Street Fish Market that thrived in Philadelphia in the early 1900’s. They are one of the first seafood companies to get the HACCP certification. They provide delivery to service industries in the tri-state area.
